Pre Lab
Directions/Description: In this lab we will continue exploring Newton's Laws of Motion. Specifically, we will look at Newton's Third Law through the application of force sensors to measure the various forces acting on low friction carts. Recall that Newton's Third Law states that if an object (A) exerts a force on a second object (B), then object B exerts a force that is equal in magnitude but opposite in direction to object A. This can bee seen in a wide variety of everyday phenomena. Imagine you are standing on ice and push your friend. Your friend will slide away in the direction you push, but you will slide away too in the opposite direct. Newton's 3rd law! See some other examples in the video to the right.
This lab will involve 4 parts, analyzing a variety of scenarios, testing the third law. First we will look at two carts connected by a string. You will make predictions (part 1) and then test your predictions (part 2). Next we will add an additional cart to the system in various orders. Again, you will make predictions (part 3) and then test your predictions (part 4). Prior to this week's lab be sure to 1) Watch my Pre Lab video below, 2) Explore the simulation as described in the video, and 3) Complete the pre-lab quiz on Blackboard. |

Lab
This week you will be completing the Newton's 3rd Law lab (page 37) from your lab manual.
We will be using the Pasco Capstone software along with a Pasco Economy Force Sensors to conduct the lab.
